Life After EcoCAR: Students Get A Lesson In Employment

Libby Kane

Submitting application after application, N.C. State students are on the hunt for jobs and internships. Students can submit over 50 applications before hearing a word from even one potential employer. The end result leaves us feeling under qualified for the workforce, when our misguided job search could be the factor that is shutting doors for us. Even if we get in the door, a lot of times we are not even sure what they’re doing there.

Dr. Susan Katz, a professor of the N.C. State English department, has been helping students help themselves in the way of employment for years. Serving as the internship director for the English department since 2005, she has dedicated her free time to teaching students how to find the job that they want, and attain it. Dr. Katz gave her time to the students of EcoCAR for some career counseling on Monday night.

Dr. Katz has helped so many students over the years that word has spread to students of other disciplines and other schools. While Dr. Katz loves helping students one-on-one, she decided to spread the wealth by documenting her process in a book called, “5 Steps to Finding The Right Job After College.” Priced competitively for college students, the book serves as an easy-to-read guide for finding your dream job.

What is it you want to do? Some students know exactly where they want to be, while others need a little more help. Dr. Katz goes step by step to delve into how to find where you will be happiest, and how to get there. She helps students get through the tasks from creating their own network, and understanding how to deal with salary and benefit questions.

Dr. Katz book is on sale for under $10.00. For more tips and advice on finding the best job for you, follow Dr. Katz’s blog: fivestepstotherightjob.com
